| When I Left Ireland |
|
REFRAIN
When I left Ireland long ago, I promised my return I'd show So many years have past that day, I fear she's turned away
I often curse that fateful night, I kissed her lips and held her tight And pledged that I'd return in time, with fortune at my side But it was not for gold she pined, but sorrow born being left behind That western ocean so unkind, could she forgive the tides?
REFRAIN
There's not a night I'll live to see, without her redhaired memory She swore to God she'd wait for me, as faithfully she cried But I set off to take my stand, her locket in my calloused hands I'd make my way in this new land return to claim my bride
REFRAIN
The fortune it eludes me still, I labor in a Boston mill If only I could know her will, has time erased that flame And I'm between two countries torn, the land I'm on, the land I'm born I'd go to her could I afford but sadly I remain.
