cd: Little Bits of Truth
track 4: Never Found Time To Go
Our fathers worked the fair from springtime through the autumn dew
She sold the wares of weaving and I ladled out the venison stew
We’d talk in the shade for hours when work was slow and we stole the chance
She had no airs about her and what she loved to do was dance
When the merchant day was over and cool set into the summertime air
You’d find the lads and lassies squeezing pipes and dancing there
She never failed to ask me “it’s a fine time to learn a step, you know”
I’d sit alone with my pride beside me, no I never found time to go
If I had a chance to do it all over I’d come away with a different fate
A ton of bricks wouldn’t need befall me, I’d put a smile on a young girl’s face
She’d ask me to dance at the fair in Dunscore, my two left feet would have surely shown
So I never found time to go
A country dance or a crowded Ceilidh, the pipers drowning out the singing
I would hear them in the distance, picturing her doing the Highland Fling
I never ventured over and all those summers hurried by
She drifted off forever and I know the reason why
I got a card saying she was marrying, wouldn’t I come for the special day?
I’m sure she was quite the vision, all dressed up being swept away
They say as a bride she’s the pride of Scotland, dancing the swords with a radiant glow
I stayed true to the fool that brought me, no I never found time to go
